What is the CrossFit Open?

New to the CrossFit Open? Here are some quick facts:

  • The CrossFit Open was first introduced in 2011 and has continued every year since. Over the course of 5 weeks, a new workout is released weekly and athletes have the chance to complete them over four days;

  • Named the “Open” as it is open to everybody, these five workouts are used as a test for most members of the community. It is also a way for the elite athletes to qualify for the CrossFit Games;

  • This year is a little different with a change of structure after the Open that was ran in February. We are lucky enough to have our second Open this year coming up in October (this week in fact!)

  • Each Friday morning, starting 11 October, a workout is released by CrossFit detailing a full workout description, movement standards and, don’t worry, there are scaling options for everyone! Then come Friday night we will be performing and judging the workouts;

  • If this is your first CrossFit Open, no need to worry as the workouts are not that different to any other CrossFit workout;

  • You can sign up and register with CrossFit to upload your open scores, which puts you in a worldwide leader board. By doing this, you can keep track of how you are performing each year by seeing how much you have improved and all the new skills you have learned. If registering isn’t appealing to you, that is no problem; you can participate just the same and keep record of your own scores.

  • The Open has always been an opportunity to bring the community together, whether that is competing with your friends, trying to beat your previous placing or being there to cheer and support other members of the gym. It is a great way to challenge yourself, hit new PR’s and most importantly – have fun!
